About the
tournament
Previously known as the Mountaineer Intercollegiate, West Virginia’s home tournament will be known as The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational beginning in 2017.
“This partnership is a natural fit for us because The Health Plan and WVU both continue to grow through innovation and hard work,” President and CEO of The Health Plan Jim Pennington said. “We are proud to be a part of that mission andgoal at WVU and to have this opportunity to represent the best of West Virginia.”
The tournament was first established in 2015 when the WVU golf team resumed varsity competition for the first time in three decades. West Virginia welcomes 14 teams to the event each year and finished fourth last season. In addition, three Mountaineers have recorded top-10 individual finishes in the past two years.
“We are very grateful to Jim Pennington and The Health Plan for supporting this event,” coach Sean Covich said. “Jim has a great passion for the game of golf, WVU athletics and the state of West Virginia. Pete Dye Golf Club is one of the top courses in the nation and with the support of The Health Plan, this event will only continue to get better.”
Pete Dye Golf Club
About the
course
One of the masters of the modern era of golf design, Pete Dye worked his legendary alchemy to transform a former coal mine in the mountains of West Virginia into a stunningly beautiful and engaging course that ranks among his greatest works.
Pete Dye Golf Club ingeniously weaves mining remnants and rambunctious terrain into a course that tempts and tests you from the opening tee shot to your final putt. Spread out over 250 acres amidst the Appalachian Mountains, the fairways bob and weave through wildly rugged terrain and Dye’s graceful earth sculptures.
Course Rankings
An oasis of a course in the hills of West Virginia. This grand, mountainous terrain required all-world creativity to carve out 18 great golf holes. A fitting task for Pete Dye.
